Minnesota's Residential Environmental Learning Centers

Environmental education that changes lives

An appreciation for the natural world is a life changing gift. Our children deserve this gift for they are the budding stewards of our planet. Minnesota is home to a broad variety of natural phenomena featured in its many nature centers and wildlife sanctuaries. While some have experienced a contact with or visit to these natural places, their contact is usually infrequent and brief.

All environmental education experiences are valuable; few have as much impact as a several-day visit to one of Minnesota's Residential Environmental Learning Centers. This immersion in nature is considered by students, to be the highlight of their entire primary educational experience. Parents and teachers alike agree that spending several days of experiential learning about natural systems and cooperative behavior adds a depth of understanding and a measure of maturity that simply cannot be achieved with short visits.

Jeffers Foundation strongly supports the concept of taking school-age children to one of these centers. Jeffers continues to partner with schools, teachers parents and the RELCs to promote this invaluable gift to the youth.

Jeffers recently introduced A Garden 4 Every School a new set of web pages aimed at highlighting what schools around the state are doing to have school gardens. We produced a set of videos to tell the story and have included support references as well.
